For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Rom. 6:23).

God showed how much He loved us by sending His one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through Him. This is real love—not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. For our sake He made Him to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God (1 Jn. 4:9-10 NLT; 2 Cor. 5:21).

Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions; He was crushed for our iniquities; upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with His stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in His mouth. When He was reviled, He did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued entrusting Himself to Him Who judges justly. He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By His wounds you have been healed

(Is. 53:4-6; 1 Pet. 2:22-24).

… God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. … You, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon You (Rom. 5:8; Ps. 86:5)
